As an avid reader of The Essential Life's blog, you already know the importance of sustainable & organic living. You've started removing harmful chemicals from your home & replacing them with natural alternatives. You've started eating healthier, organic food that is free of pesticides & other harmful chemicals. You've taken big steps toward living a healthier & greener lifestyle.

If you want to protect yourself & your family against the dangers of harmful chemicals while protecting the planet as well, ditching harmful chemical cleaners & eating organic food isn't quite enough.

Sometimes, we forget about the harmful chemicals we put on our bodies each day as we shower, moisturise our skin & put on our makeup. The vast majority of the beauty products we put on our bodies contain dyes, synthetic perfumes & fragrances, & chemical preservatives, all of which have a detrimental impact on our health & the environment.

In the United States, harmful chemicals in beauty products is much more problematic. Both Canada & the European Union regulate against a number of harmful chemicals in beauty products. Included on this list are formaldehyde, triclosan & 1,4-dioxane. The FDA allows all of these chemicals to be used in cosmetics & other beauty products.

What all of this means is that, as a consumer, you must be extra-vigilant when it comes to the products that you buy to ensure you are not exposing yourself & your family to harmful chemicals that could be detrimental to their health & even cause cancer down the line. Being vigilant means knowing what is in the products you are buying & consciously selecting greener alternatives.

As the beauty industry continues to "go green", making eco-conscious & healthier choices with the cosmetics that you buy is becoming easier & easier. If you're ready to make the change & go green with your beauty routine, these 5 green beauty swaps are a good place to start.

Go Green With Your Beauty Routine

Hair Dye for Your Green Beauty Routine

When it comes to beauty products, hair dye is a staple in many households. Some of us use hair dye because we are trying to stop the clock & banish greys, while others just want to try something a little different for a while. Whatever the reason you dye your hair, you might not be aware that most hair dyes are loaded with harmful chemicals & carcinogens.

Hair dye typically contains ammonia, p-phenylenediamine, phthalates, parabens & resorcinol. These chemicals can all be tongue-twisters & hard to pronounce. They're also detrimental to our health & have been linked to the rise in cancer rates in the developed world.

The Swap

Instead of opting for your go-to drug store brand of hair dye, opt for something a little more natural. A product we love is Henna Color Lab. Their hair dye is made from all-natural ingredients & doesn't contain any harmful chemicals. As an added bonus, their hair dye is also really good for your hair.

For a bit of fun, you can also try mixing Henna Color Lab's hair dye together to create you own, unique hair colour.

Nail Polish for Your Green Beauty Routine

Nail polishes are one of the biggest offenders when it comes to containing harmful chemicals. Most nail polishes contain formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, parabens & lead. While we can't tell you what each of these chemicals are, we do know that a number of these harmful chemicals have been linked to ill-health effects.

The Swap

Instead of getting your nails done at the salon, or purchasing nail polish from the drug store, we recommend ZOYA nail polishes. Their polishes are toxin free & do not contain formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, camphor, TPHP, parabens, xylene, ethyl tosylamide or lead.

Zoya's nail polishes come in a wide range of colours &, best of all, Zoya has recently been developing even more all-natural, toxin-free cosmetic products. Their beauty line has begun to expand & now include lip colour as well.

Moisturiser for Your Green Beauty Routine

In terms of beauty products & cosmetics that are detrimental to your health, the moisturiser that you are using is an important one for you to swap out. As our body's largest organ, or skin is extremely absorbent. When you put moisturisers on your body that are loaded with harmful chemicals, those chemicals make their way right into your blood stream.

In addition to building up in your body, the chemicals in traditional moisturiser can be bad for your skin which, overtime, can cause age spots & other signs of premature ageing.

The Swap

Moisturiser is a pretty easy swap. Nourishing your skin naturally is as easy as purchasing some coconut oil at your local organic food market. If you'd like something a little bit more specialised & a little less oily, we highly recommend Saje Natural Wellness' sentiva soothing body lotion. This soothing body lotion is made with all-natural, sustainably sourced Shea butter & blended with ultra hydrating Rose Essential Oil to protect your skin & keep it nourished.

Deodorant for Your Green Beauty Routine

Deodorant might seem like an innocuous beauty product, however, the deodorant you pick up from your local drug store is another chemical laden bad guy lurking in your medicine cabinet. Deodorants & antiperspirants contain hormone-disrupting aluminum & harmful parabens.

The Swap

Chemical-free deodorant is a product that has been around for a number of years. There are quite a few different all-natural deodorants on the market, but the one that we love is Escents' Balsam Deodorant.  Made from vegetable proteins, this all-natural deodorant is scented with Frankincense, Patchouli & Tea Tree Essential Oil to leave a musky scent reminiscent of a balsam forest.

Lipstick for Your Green Beauty Routine

Lipstick is an ge-old beauty product that has been a staple of many beauty regimens for...well, forever, it seems like. Over the years, lipstick manufacturers have struggled to create a product that has long-lasting & vibrant colour. This has resulted in the use of several harmful chemicals including heavy metals, arsenic, lead & mercury.

The Swap

In recent years, a number of organic & chemical-free lipsticks have sprung up. Our favourite, however, is Pure Community's Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti-Ageing Lipstick. This lipstick has an extremely vibrant hue & is 100% pure & toxin-free.
