Acid reflux is an uncomfortable condition where stomach acid flows in reverse up into the oesophagus as a result of your lower oesophageal sphincter (LES) remaining open after food has passed through into your stomach.  This causes a burning sensation in your chest & over time can result in severe damage to your oesophagus, throat & mouth.  

While most, if not all, people will experience acid reflux at some point in their life, if you are among the percentage of the population that experience acid reflux more than twice per week, it is likely that you have acid reflux disease.  In the instances of acid reflux disease, it is always best to seek medical care for diagnosis & treating this illness.

Causes of Acid Reflux

There are a number of things that have been linked to causing acid reflux including:

  • Eating a large meal & then laying down soon afterward
  • Being obese or overweight
  • Eating shortly before you go to bed for the evening
  • Drinking alcoholic beverages, sodas, coffee or tea
  • Smoking
  • Being under a lot of stress or suffering from anxiety
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications such as Aspirin

All of these have been shown to increase the instances of acid reflux symptoms which include a sore throat with difficulty swallowing, coughing or wheezing, chest pain that worsens when lying down, discomfort following eating a meal & excessive salivation.

Treating Acid Reflux Naturally

There are a number of ways that you can treat acid reflux naturally.  A lifestyle change is a good place to start.  Try avoiding foods that trigger an acid reflux flair-up.  Eat smaller meals & avoid over-eating.  Quit smoking & avoid alcohol.  Try eating earlier & avoid laying down directly after eating.  Avoid wearing clothing that is tight around your mid section.  

In addition to these lifestyle changes, it is a good idea to start a regular exercise routine.  If you suffer from a great deal of stress or anxiety, coping strategies such as meditation can help ease your acid reflux.  Drinking more water & avoiding alcohol beverages & sodas is a good idea for preventing acid reflux.

Essential Oils for Treating Acid Reflux

Lemon Essential Oil

Place 1-2 drops of Lemon Essential Oil on your tongue & swish the oil around with saliva.  Because Lemon Essential Oil is alkaline in your body, it will help to communicate to your stomach that is doesn't need to produce so much stomach acid.  You can also add 3-4 drops of Lemon Essential Oil to a glass of water before each meal to prepare your digestive system.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Add 3-4 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil to one teaspoon of honey & then add the mixture to some herbal tea.  Try drinking this mixture at the start of each day.

Essential Oil Recipe for Acid Reflux & Heart Burn

Blend the following Essential Oils into a dark-coloured glass bottle.  In the evenings, rub 4-5 drops of this blend into the arch of both your feet & in clock-wise circles over your abdomen.

  • 15 drops - Coriander Essential Oil
  • 15 drops - Grapefruit Essential Oil
  • 10 drops - Cypress Essential Oil
  • 10 drops - Lemon Essential Oil

You can also add a few drops of Peppermint Essential Oil to this blend.  When applying Peppermint topically, be aware that it can create a cooling feel on your skin that might irritate sensitive skin.  Additionally, when applying this blend, avoid direct sunlight as Grapefruit & Lemon Essential Oils cause photosensitivity.
