Treat the Underlying Cause of Chronic Pain With Essential Oils

featured on the essential life

Treating chronic pain involves more than simply administering pain killers & moving on with your day. When I see clients regarding treatment for chronic pain, the first thing I want to talk about is that individual's background & current lifestyle. Why is collecting a thorough personal history a necessity?  It's important, first, to get to the root of any potential underlying conditions related to a person's pain & discomfort.

One of the books that I read when I first started researching how prolonged stress manifests itself physically was When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate. This book details the correlation between stress & chronic pain, & delves into the effects of long-term stress on our bodies.

The Effects of Stress on the Body

Stress is our body's reaction to harm, whether that harm is real or perceived. It is a chemical reaction that occurs in our body when we feel threatened. Referred to as the body's "fight or flight" response, stress puts us in a state where we are ready to act in self-preservation. This state of panic is only supposed to be a quick, knee-jerk reaction to keep us out of harm, but modern life & the stress we put ourselves under has left us in a constant state of panic.

It's necessary to note that not all stress is bad. In many instances, such as quickly pumping the breaks of your car to avoid an accident, stress helps us react with appropriate speed without having to think about the situation. For this reason, our bodies are designed to handle small amounts of stress.

Stress becomes problematic when we endure chronic & long-term stress without taking action to release the stress from our bodies.  Long term stress can have negative, & extreme, consequences that can manifest themselves in our over-all physical health.

Managing Stress With Aromatherapy

It is often stress & trauma that leads to chronic pain.  In these instances, it is necessary to treat pain with Essential Oils & to treat the stress that is the underlying problem.

Essential Oil Recipe for Stress Relief

The following Essential Oil stress relief recipe can be diffused at home, or blended into a carrier oil such a coconut oil or jojoba oil, for use as a massage or bath oil.

  • 10 drops - Bergamot Essential Oil
  • 5 drops - Lavender Essential Oil
  • 4 drops - Orange Essential Oil
  • 2 drops - Neroli Essential Oil
  • 1 drop - Chamomile Essential Oil

Blend these oils in a glass amber bottle & store your blend away in a cool, dark place to prevent your oils from going bad. When diffusing this blend, diffuse 8-10 drops at a time. You can also blend these oils directly into a carrier for use as a massage oil & apply it throughout the day as needed.

In addition to seeking out aromatherapy treatments from stress & chronic pain, make sure you have someone you trust, who you can talk to about what you are struggling with. If you don't want to talk to your friends, family or loved ones about it, consider seeing a professional. Release is an important part of coping & treating stress.
